The Revelation Of Barbie
Updated: Jul 17, 2020
Growing up in this day and age we were suffocated by Barbie. My world was dominated by promotions of her flawless appearance. Barbie is so much more than just a doll. She is a representation of a society that is infatuated with looks. From a young age, walking through a shopping centre to see the mannequins or simply playing with these doll, i was fixating this body ideal into my mind. No wonder the statistics for low body self-esteem and eating disorders are so high. When you are subscribing to this ideology you are telling yourself that this ‘perfect image’ is attainable. In the book “Ken and Barbie at Life Size,” author Kevin Norton states that only about one in 100,000 women actually match the Barbie body image.
It is so important to remember that just like these dolls, the appearance they portray is fake. And you are so much more than that.
So do not conform to what society bombards us with. Unfollow any Instagram account that does not bring joy to your life. Replace them with healthy, authentic and inspiring accounts such as ‘the mind gym’ or ‘bloom app’.
“Beautiful has nothing to do with looks, it has everything to do with how you are as a person and how you make others feel about themselves” Improving your body confidence is recognising what makes you feel inferior. Understand that looks aren’t within your control and wasting all this negative energy to dislike your body, won’t change your body! This is your story and only you have the power to change it. I know it is easier said than done but honestly everyone has been there and come out the other side sooner or later.
It really isn’t worth all the effort to change your genetic body, it is a losing battle when you go against your beautiful, natural self. Most people don’t notice as much as you think and the truth is they will not like you better if you are slimmer, fuller, more toned or curvy.
So today go out and be enough for yourself, the rest of the world can wait. You are not alone and you have the ability to smile in the face of adversity. Reach out if you need someone, a problem told is a problem halved. You are so worthy and beautiful just as you are.
